Tips for Buying Domains and Hosting

Buying Your Domain

Buying a domain is the first step in the process of building a web site. Many people put too much energy into choosing just the “right” domain name. Sure, it’s important, but this step is very tiny compared the rest. It is good if you can get a keyword or two in your domain name, but do not force it so that it sounds funky and/or spammy. Keep it as short as possible and easy to spell. Choose the .com version if at all possible (just because people will remember it better…Google does not care).

Hosting Your Site

Your web site’s host is where your web pages will be stored and served out onto the web. There are many hosts to chose from. Some are better than others. Since I have switched entirely now to using WordPress, I only use HostGator for the new sites I create. They are 100% compatible with WordPress. Some hosts, like GoDaddy, have issues with various plugins (as in THEY DON’T WORK!). HostGator is low prices, very reliable and I LOVE their chat support system.
