Breaking Down Compostable Packaging

10:30 am - 11:30 am
Location:

Room 402, Chiliwack

When does it make sense to redesign packaging to be compostable, and when is it better to focus on recyclability and reuse? What role can compostable packaging play in food waste recovery? What are the challenges and opportunities for integrating compostable packaging into collection programs for composting?

Acceptance of compostable packaging in industrial composting systems has been a hotly debated topic in recent years. Third-party certified compostable packaging can divert waste from landfills, reduce GHG emissions and keep material in the system. In practice, however, issues with labeling, contamination and variability in real world composting conditions have resulted in some programs deciding to only allow food scraps in collection programs. Join leading voices in the composting and packaging communities for a data-driven approach to where compostable packaging fits in the circular economy.
